Origin:

  • Juedi is an ancient Yemeni coffee variety, found primarily in the western highlands of Yemen. It is less well-known internationally but highly valued locally for its distinctive flavor and resilient growth in arid conditions.

Taste Profile:

  • Juedi coffee tends to have a milder acidity than Udaini but offers a smoother body with flavors that often lean towards earthy and nutty tones. Tasting notes typically include cocoa, dried fruits, and subtle spices like cinnamon or clove. The aftertaste can be long-lasting and sweet, with some coffees having a hint of tobacco or cedar.

Growing Conditions:

  • Grown at similar altitudes to Udaini, between 1,500 to 2,300 meters, Juedi benefits from Yemen’s dry, rocky soils and unique microclimates. These conditions help to concentrate the sugars within the coffee cherry, giving it its distinct taste.

Processing Method:

  • Typically processed through the natural (dry) method, which is the traditional processing method in Yemen. This helps preserve the earthy, slightly rustic flavors that characterize Juedi coffee.

Special Characteristics:

  • Balanced and smooth, with earthy and nutty tones.
  • Often has a fuller body and lower acidity compared to Udaini.
  • Traditionally grown on terraced farms using ancient farming techniques.
  • Smaller and denser beans, contributing to its rich flavor.

Comparison Between Udaini and Juedi

  • Flavor Profile: Udaini is more fruity and bright, while Juedi is more earthy and nutty with a smoother finish.
  • Acidity: Udaini has a higher acidity, whereas Juedi has lower acidity with a fuller body.
  • Body: Udaini tends to have a lighter body, while Juedi offers a richer, fuller body.
