Udaini (Yemeni Coffee Variety)

Origin:

  • The Udaini variety is indigenous to Yemen and is one of the most prized and oldest heirloom coffee varieties in the world. It originates from the high-altitude regions of Yemen, primarily in areas like Haraz and Ibb.

Taste Profile:

  • Udaini coffee is renowned for its complex and layered flavor profile. The cup typically features bright acidity with a sweet and fruity taste. Common tasting notes include stone fruits such as peach, apricot, and plum, often accompanied by hints of chocolate, spice, and a wine-like body. There is also often a floral aroma, making it a favorite for specialty coffee enthusiasts.

Growing Conditions:

  • Grown at elevations ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 meters (5,900 to 7,900 feet), the high altitude combined with Yemen’s unique dry, terraced landscapes contributes to its distinctive flavor. The Udaini variety thrives in low-rainfall, sun-drenched conditions, making the beans smaller but denser, which adds to their intense flavor.

Processing Method:

  • Traditionally, Udaini coffee is processed through the natural (dry) method, where the beans are sun-dried inside the cherry. This process further enhances the fruity and wine-like characteristics of the coffee.

Special Characteristics:

  • Small, dense beans with intense flavors.
  • Known for its bright acidity and fruity sweetness.
  • Usually shade-grown in small family farms using traditional farming methods.
  • Its heritage dates back hundreds of years, making it one of the purest heirloom coffee varieties in the world.
